Code vs Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

How hard can it possibly be to make a simple sandwich? 🤷‍♀️👩🏽‍💻 Technology can bring your vision to the world! The catch is - we must communicate. - You, me (techie), everyone!

Code vs Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

How hard can it possibly be to make a simple sandwich?

The Article below is from a post that I shared on LinkedIn last week, and wanted to share with you here.

In case you’re wondering (and we know you are 😂) why many so of us in the tech world talk ALOT, check out the video below. ⬇️ (It’s not the only reason — some of us are just chatty. 🤷♀️)

This video is a hilarious and educational look at the level of detail needed to turn human vision into computer code. Check it out — it’s totally worth the giggle factor, as well as the reality check. ⬇️

So… back to why techies talk alot. We…

  • go down bunny trails 🐇 (trying to find the connection we have missed in what we are trying to communicate)
  • over-explain 🐇
  • repeat the over-explanation — and variations of said explanation 🐇
  • emphasize DETAILS 🗒
  • require DETAILS 🗒
  • give you a headache writing out all the DETAILS 👿👩🏽💻

Because... code does not understand conversation, inference, or culture. Tech consultants, devs, and coders understand these things, and incorporate them into the code.

Code does NOT:

  • “understand what you mean”
  • automatically enact your wish to be inclusive and diverse
  • fill in details you think are “just common sense” (“put knife in peanut butter” does NOT mean “put non-handle end of knife in peanut butter” — see video above ⬆️ 😂)

After all the headaches and repetitive conversations… well-written code CAN:

  • link your words to a bigger picture
  • communicate new ideas to your existing audience — and hopefully catch the eye of new audiences
  • create wondrous opportunities for good

We just need to spend time on the message.

We need to talk, discuss, ask questions, write out everything in detail, test, receive honest feedback… And do it all many times over, until we get it right.

Most importantly — we need to create code in a spirit of leadership.

Each of us is a leader in this endeavour. You, me, your CSuite, managers, employees, vendors, clients. The decisions we make each day, and the process of patience, inclusion, and communication, are key to creating the product you envision.

Don’t worry, we will walk you through everything. It’s what we do. Welcome to our world — we are happy to meet you! Please bring tea and donuts. Or a dog. Dogs are fun, and stress-relieving.🙋♀️🐶
