“I have been paid to kill you”

I look forward to the day when emails like this are laughed at by everyone who receives them. But today is not that day. The damage, fear, and financial loss is real. Criminals are real. Let's dig into how to get ahead of these snakes once and for all.

I look forward to the day when emails like this are laughed at by everyone who receives them.

But today is not that day.

Emails like this are still alarming to so many people who receive them and don’t understand  that they are in absolutely no danger.

Elderly people. Isolated people. People who are not tech-savvy.

AND

People who know this scammer isn't going to kill them, but aren't sure what might actually happen if they ignore the email. Many scammers will send a follow-up message with proof that they have your address, or know where you work.  What else do they have? What will they do with this information?

The more light we shine on these idiots, the more power we give back to the people they target.

A wise person once said to me -

"It's a good thing most criminals are stupid."

I don’t know if it’s “most”, “many”, or “all” - but the sentiment is absolutely true. So many of the criminals that cross our paths give us hints, clues, and blatant proof of their idiocy.

Of course, there are varying levels of “believable” in the scams attempted by criminals. Some are more believable than others - but we can start by shutting down every criminal who is this obvious - and - yes - this stupid.

If you don’t know, and you don’t know who to ask, this is very stressful.

Except for the stress factor - and perhaps the loss of $500 - this email is harmless, of course.

Unless it isn’t.

Why? You ask.

The answer - or at least a couple of the myriad answers (I do try not to write a book all in one post 📕 👍 😃) - are in my blog posts of July 24 and September 05:

Help! I’m in big trouble - send money.
In 2022 phishing victims in the U.S. alone numbered over 300k people. Real people. People whose losses came to over $50 BILLION. Let’s look at how to you stay safe online? A refresher for some, new info for others!
